USMNT vs Bosnia Preview: Round of 32 Matchup at Levi's Stadium

USMNT vs Bosnia Herzegovina 2026 World Cup Round of 32 Preview at Levi's Stadium

The group stage is over. The rotation games are done. The moment the United States has been building toward - at home, in front of their own fans, in a knockout round - is here.

The USMNT faces Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, July 1 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. A win sends the US into the Round of 16, where Belgium or Senegal would be waiting. A loss sends them home. It is that simple.

The last time the United States won a World Cup knockout game was 2002. That is a long time. Wednesday is a chance to change that.

Who Is Bosnia and Herzegovina?

This is Bosnia's first time reaching the knockout stage. They made their World Cup debut in 2014 and went out in the group stage. Getting to the Round of 32 in 2026 is already a program milestone, and they will not be treating this game as a victory lap.

Bosnia finished third in Group B with four points - a 1-1 draw with Canada, a 3-1 win over Qatar, and a 4-1 loss to Switzerland. That loss to Switzerland is the number to watch. When pressed by a quality team with pace and physicality, Bosnia's defense showed cracks. The USA has the personnel to exploit the same vulnerabilities.

Who to know:

Edin Dzeko - The captain is 40 years old and still leading the line. Do not let the age fool you. Dzeko's hold-up play, reading of the game, and ability to bring others into play make him a constant threat in the box. He will not run in behind, but he does not need to. The USA's center backs need to stay physical with him from the first whistle.

Ermedin Demirovic - Stuttgart's striker is the most dangerous attacking player Bosnia has and the one who can hurt the USA in transition. He finished the group stage with two goals and looked sharp against Qatar. He is quicker and more direct than Dzeko and represents a different kind of problem for the American backline.

Nikola Vasilj - Bosnia's goalkeeper will likely have to be busy if the USA gets its first-choice attack back on the field. His command of the box and ability to handle pressure will matter if the USMNT turns this into a high-volume attacking game.

Benjamin Tahirovic and Ivan Sunjic - Bosnia's midfield has to keep the game compact. If Tahirovic and Sunjic can slow down the middle and keep Dzeko and Demirovic connected, Bosnia can make this uncomfortable. If Adams and McKennie win that battle, the USA should control the match.

Sead Kolasinac - The veteran left back is experienced at the highest level and gives Bosnia defensive solidity on that side. His overlapping runs can cause problems if the USA does not track him.

The USA Is Coming In with Answers

The group stage raised questions. The Turkiye loss was sloppy, passive, and too physical for too long. But context matters - that was a rotated squad in a dead rubber.

On Wednesday, the starters are back.

Balogun, Robinson, Adams, and Richards - all managed carefully against Turkiye - are expected to return to the starting XI. That is a completely different team. Balogun alone changes the offensive dynamic. His pressing, his runs in behind, and his finishing have made him the USA's best player in this tournament. Bosnia struggled when Switzerland attacked with pace and pressure, and Balogun gives the USA that same vertical threat.

Christian Pulisic is back in the picture. He exited the Paraguay opener at halftime, missed the Australia match, then returned for 32 minutes against Turkiye. After that cameo, he said he felt healthy and that fans can expect the USA to give "everything we got" against Bosnia. That is not bulletin board material. That is a player who got his minutes in a low-stakes environment and should be ready for the knockout round.

Auston Trusty rolled his ankle late in the Turkiye match but has indicated he will be fine. Worth monitoring in warmups, but the expectation is he is available.

Keys for the USA

Press from the start. Bosnia showed against Switzerland that they can be rattled when a high press disrupts their buildup. The USA's front line - Balogun, Pulisic, Pepi - has the energy and the quality to make Bosnia's center backs uncomfortable in possession. Do not let Dzeko settle.

Win the midfield battle. Adams coming back changes everything in the middle of the park. Bosnia has enough physicality to drag the game into a grind, but if McKennie and Adams dominate the center, Demirovic gets isolated and the USA controls the tempo.

No second-half letdown. The Australia second half and the Turkiye game are the warning signs. The USA cannot get a lead and go passive. Bosnia will fight for 90 minutes - this is their biggest game in program history. The USA needs to match that intensity for the full 90.

Prediction

USA 2, Bosnia 0.

The starters are back, Pulisic is healthy enough to matter, and Bosnia - while dangerous - is beatable. A focused, physical USMNT that presses from the opening whistle ends the 2002 drought Wednesday and advances to the Round of 16.

The question was never whether the USA is good enough. We have always known the answer to that question. Now it is time to show it.
