USMNT vs Belgium Preview: 2026 World Cup Round of 16, Balogun Cleared

USMNT vs Belgium 2026 World Cup Round of 16 preview in Seattle

There was supposed to be a major question hanging over this match. Who replaces Folarin Balogun?

That question has been answered loudly, and not without controversy.

FIFA's disciplinary committee lifted Balogun's red card suspension, making the USA's leading scorer eligible to play in Monday's Round of 16 against Belgium. FIFA cited Article 27 of the disciplinary code, placing the suspension on probation for one year rather than forcing him to sit out. If Balogun commits a similar offense during that window, the ban goes into effect.

The reaction from Belgium was not subtle. Coach Rudi Garcia delivered a line for the ages: "I didn't know that at the World Cup the 5th of July is actually the first of April."

Belgium officials called the reversal unprecedented, said they were "astonished," and are exploring their options. FIFA has not elaborated beyond the Article 27 citation, and the committee's reasoning may not get much further explanation before kickoff.

What we know is this: Balogun is playing. The USA's leading scorer is available for the biggest game in American soccer in a generation. Everything else is noise once the whistle blows.

Who Is Belgium?

This is almost certainly Kevin De Bruyne's last World Cup. The 34-year-old left Manchester City for Napoli last year and arrived in the United States fit and healthy, still the most dangerous passer in the game when operating at his level. He is Belgium's heartbeat, their creative engine, and the one player the USA cannot allow to control the tempo of the game. If De Bruyne gets time and space in midfield, things will get difficult in a hurry.

Romelu Lukaku is the other name that matters. Belgium's all-time leading scorer with 89 international goals, Lukaku has been a question mark all tournament after recurring fitness concerns and limited minutes. Garcia has trusted his experience anyway, and Lukaku's presence alone changes how defenses have to approach Belgium's attack. Even at less than full fitness, he is a problem in the box.

Thibaut Courtois is in goal and needs no introduction. One of the best goalkeepers in the world, his positioning and shot-stopping will make it harder for the USA to convert the chances they create. Every shot on goal against Belgium needs to be a quality one.

Belgium got past Senegal 3-2 in extra time in the Round of 32, a hard-fought win that included a controversial penalty. They are not a team that has blown everyone out. They grind, they find moments of quality, and De Bruyne makes them dangerous from anywhere on the field.

Keys for the USA

Win the midfield first. De Bruyne is the game within the game. Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie need to limit his time and space from the opening whistle. If De Bruyne is receiving the ball and turning freely, Belgium's attack becomes a different animal. Every extra second he gets is a problem.

Use Balogun early. The best thing the USA can do with Balogun available is bring his pressure into the match immediately. His pressing, his runs in behind, his directness, all of it puts pressure on Belgium's center backs right away and prevents their defenders from settling into the rhythm of the game. The Bosnia match showed what he brings to this team. Belgium knows it too.

Protect the set piece situations. Lukaku at corners and free kicks, even at limited fitness, is a genuine threat in the air. The USA's backline has been excellent in this tournament, but it cannot switch off for dead balls with Lukaku in the box.

Do not let it go to extra time if possible. Belgium is a team built to grind through 120 minutes. The USA would prefer to win this in 90. Scoring first would be a significant advantage because it forces Belgium to open up, which plays into the USA's pace and transition game.

The Bigger Picture

This is the match the home World Cup was supposed to build toward. A knockout game against a quality European side, with everything on the line and a quarterfinal spot waiting on the other side.

The USA has already proven it can handle pressure in this tournament, and winning with 10 men against Bosnia was as big a gut-check moment as any team has faced in these knockouts. This is a different kind of test. Belgium is more technically sophisticated than Bosnia, more dangerous from midfield, and Courtois will stop shots that most keepers would not.

But Balogun is available. Christian Pulisic is healthy. The starters are ready. And this team has spent the last three weeks proving that it belongs on this stage.

Prediction

USA 2, Belgium 1.

Balogun's return changes the USA's ceiling. He scores, the USA takes the lead, and Belgium, forced to push forward and leave space in behind, runs into exactly the kind of transition the USA exploits best. It will not be comfortable. De Bruyne will have his moments. But the USA advances.

The quarterfinal is within reach.
