It was not close. Belgium was the better team from the opening minutes, and it was never really in doubt.
The United States men's national team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup on Monday night, losing 4-1 to Belgium in the Round of 16 in Seattle. After everything this tournament delivered, including the Bosnia win, playing with 10 men, and the first USMNT knockout win since 2002, this one hurt. Belgium was simply on a different level, and the USA had no answer for it.
Belgium 4, USA 1. Round of 16. Seattle.

How It Happened
Belgium came out with a clear plan and executed it from the first whistle. Charles De Ketelaere opened the scoring in the 9th minute, tapping in a Nicolas Raskin cross from inside the six-yard box before the USA had settled into the game.
The USA pulled level in the 31st minute through Malik Tillman, a free kick from 25 yards that took a deflection off Hans Vanaken's head and wrong-footed Thibaut Courtois. For a moment, it felt like the USA had found a foothold.
Belgium took it back two minutes later. Leandro Trossard beat Sergino Dest down the flank, and De Ketelaere got his second of the night with a header. 2-1 at the half, Belgium firmly in control.
The second half was one-way traffic. Hans Vanaken made it 3-1 in the 57th minute after a costly Matt Freese misplay, a mistake that effectively ended the contest. Pulisic was substituted off shortly after with what appeared to be an injury, and from that point on the USA was chasing a game that had already gotten away from them.
Romelu Lukaku added the fourth in stoppage time to put a final, definitive stamp on the result. Balogun had a one-on-one chance late in the game, but Courtois, one of the best in the world, made the save. A snapshot of the night: the USA created enough to make it look closer, but Belgium converted everything that mattered.
What Went Wrong
The defense was the Achilles heel all night. Belgium exploited Dest's side repeatedly, and De Ketelaere was given too much freedom between the lines. The USA's midfield never controlled the tempo the way it needed to. Vanaken and Belgium's midfield dictated the pace, and by the time the USA tried to respond, the scoreline was already away from them.
Balogun fought hard but was isolated for much of the game. Without service in behind, his impact was limited. Pulisic's injury in the 59th minute removed the USA's most dangerous dribbler at the worst possible moment.
The Bigger Picture
This tournament was still a significant moment for American soccer. The Bosnia win ended the USMNT's knockout-win drought dating back to 2002. The team competed in the group stage, reached the Round of 16 at a home World Cup, and gave the country real moments to remember. This was a young group with genuine talent, and many of these players will be back.
But Belgium exposed the gap that still exists between the USMNT and Europe's elite. The defensive shape and the midfield quality when things go wrong need to grow before this program can compete with the best teams in the world in a knockout setting.
The U.S. still has not reached a World Cup quarterfinal since 2002. Belgium moves on to face Spain. For the USMNT, the work begins now. The next World Cup is four years away.
