Season-long contests are fun. But nothing sharpens your focus quite like knowing one bad pick could end your run.
That is the beauty of a Survivor Pool. Every period you make one pick. Get it right and you live to fight another day. Get it wrong and you lose a life. Lose them all and you are out. It sounds simple, and it is, but the strategy that builds up over a full season is anything but.
Crystal Ball Picks offers Survivor Pools across MLB, NBA, NHL, WNBA, NFL, College Football, College Basketball, and Women's College Basketball, with two different formats to choose from depending on how you like to play.
Here is everything you need to know.
What Is a Survivor Pool?
A survivor pool is a pick'em contest where the goal is to stay alive longer than everyone else. You make one pick each period, usually choosing a team to win. If your pick is correct, you keep going. If your pick loses or you miss the deadline, you lose a life.
The twist is that survivor pools get harder the longer they last. In Crystal Ball Picks, you cannot reuse the same team in the same contest, so every correct pick also removes one future option. Winning is not just about picking the safest team today. It is about surviving today without wrecking your options tomorrow.
The Two Formats
| Format | Pick Options | Team Reuse | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Survivor | Any eligible team on the schedule | No repeats | Players who like long-range planning |
| Forced Pick Survivor | Same 3-5 game slate for everyone | No repeats | Players who like shared, high-pressure decisions |
Classic Survivor
The traditional format and the purist's choice.
Each pick period, daily or weekly depending on the sport, you choose any team on that period's schedule. If your team wins, you survive and your streak grows. If they lose, you lose a life.
The catch: You cannot use the same team twice. Every team you pick is locked out for the rest of the contest. That means the easy picks get used up fast, and the longer you survive, the harder the decisions become. Smart players save their most reliable teams for the moments when they need them most. Burn your best options early and you will regret it by midseason.
Classic Survivor rewards preparation. Know your sport, know the schedule, and plan ahead.
Forced Pick Survivor
Same elimination rules as Classic, but with one major twist that changes everything.
Instead of picking from the full daily schedule, every player in the contest is locked to the same small slate of games, randomly generated each period from that day's available matchups. The slate contains between 3 and 5 games, depending on how the contest is configured, and it is the same for every player. Nobody gets an edge from a wider pool.
This levels the playing field in a way Classic cannot. Everyone is weighing the same matchups, making the same tough calls, and hoping their read on the game is better than the person next to them. It creates a shared experience, and when that slate is brutal, everyone feels it together.
The catch: Same as Classic. You still cannot reuse a team. Your options within the forced slate shrink as the season goes on, so the longer you survive, the more constrained your choices become.
Forced Pick rewards adaptability. You do not always get the matchup you want. You work with what you have got.
The Lives System
Both formats use the same lives system, and understanding it is the key to long-term survival.
| Event | Effect |
|---|---|
| Correct pick | Stay alive, streak grows |
| Wrong pick or missed pick | -1 life |
| 0 lives remaining | Eliminated |
| Every 5 correct picks in a row | +1 bonus life |
You start with 3 lives and can earn up to a maximum of 6.
The streak bonus is where the real strategy lives. Every time your current win streak hits a multiple of 5, 5, 10, 15, and so on, you earn one bonus life, up to the 6-life cap. That means a hot streak does not just keep you alive. It rebuilds your cushion and gives you room to absorb a bad beat later in the season.
The app always shows you how many consecutive correct picks you are away from your next bonus life, so you always know where you stand.
Pick Periods
Survivor Pools run on either a daily or weekly cadence depending on the sport:
| Cadence | Sports |
|---|---|
| Daily | MLB, NBA, NHL, WNBA, CBB, WCBB |
| Weekly | NFL, CFB |
How to Win
Be the last player with lives remaining. If multiple players survive to the end of the contest without being eliminated, it is a shared win.
A Few Tips Before You Start
In Classic Survivor: Resist the urge to use your best teams right away. The early periods feel easy, but the schedule gets harder and your options get thinner. Map out a few weeks in advance if you can.
In Forced Pick: You do not control the slate, but you still control which team from that slate you back. Read every matchup carefully. Sometimes the right call is not the obvious one.
On streak bonuses: A 5-game win streak does not just prove you know what you are doing. It refills a life you might have lost along the way. Play for the streak, not just the next pick.
