Denny Hamlin Wins Pocono for Third Straight NASCAR Cup Victory

Denny Hamlin wins at Pocono Raceway for third consecutive NASCAR Cup Series victory in 2026

Three in a row.

Nobody has done this in NASCAR quite like Denny Hamlin is doing it right now. Back-to-back comeback wins at Nashville and Michigan already had the sport buzzing. Then Hamlin went to Pocono on Sunday and did something different entirely: he was simply the best car all day long.

Denny Hamlin wins the Great American Getaway 400. His 64th career Cup Series victory. Third consecutive win. And he is now alone in 9th place on the all-time wins list.

Dominant From the Drop

There was no comeback story at Pocono. No penalty sending him to the rear, no digging out from last place, no dramatic charge through traffic. This time, Hamlin started from the pole - his 51st career Cup pole - and proved that he didn't need a deficit to find his best.

He won Stage 1 outright and was consistently the fastest car on the 2.5-mile tri-oval all afternoon. This was a different kind of statement than Nashville and Michigan. Those wins showed Hamlin's resilience. Pocono showed his dominance.

The decisive move came with five laps remaining. Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell had been executing a fuel-saving strategy, biding his time in front. Hamlin, on fresher tires, closed in, made the pass stick, and pulled away cleanly to the checkered flag. Tyler Reddick finished second, William Byron third.

64 Wins. All Alone at 9th.

At Michigan two weeks ago, Hamlin's 63rd career win pulled him even with Kyle Busch on the all-time Cup Series wins list. Sunday's victory at Pocono moved him past Busch into sole possession of 9th place in NASCAR history.

The moment carried significant emotional weight. Hamlin paused during his post-race interview to deliver a tribute to his late former Joe Gibbs Racing teammate - an acknowledgment that passing Busch on this list is not something he takes lightly. Fans at Pocono had painted a rock with "18 8" in tribute to both drivers, a detail that did not go unnoticed in victory lane.

There is also a remarkable coincidence to the timing. Pocono was the site of Hamlin's first career Cup Series win, on June 11, 2006 - almost exactly 20 years ago to the day. He has now won at this track 8 times, more than any driver in history. Pocono is his track. It always has been.

Three Straight. First Time Ever.

In more than 20 seasons of Cup Series racing, Hamlin had never won three consecutive points races. He has been one of the most consistent winners of his generation, but stringing together a three-race streak had always eluded him.

It no longer does.

Three consecutive wins in the modern NASCAR era is rare company, and the timing matters. This is no longer just a strong summer stretch. This is a regular-season charge with real championship weight behind it.

The Chase Is On

Hamlin entered Pocono trailing points leader Tyler Reddick by 51 points. He leaves with the gap tightened considerably - and Reddick finished second, meaning Hamlin gained ground even while the points leader had a strong run.

Two weeks ago the gap was 97 points. Now the narrative of this regular season has completely changed.

For context on how rapid the shift has been:

After...Reddick Lead
Michigan51 points
PoconoTightened significantly

Hamlin has won three straight and is closing fast on a points leader who has his own three-win streak from earlier in the season. This championship battle is shaping up to be something special.

What He Said

Before the race on Saturday, Hamlin sounded like a driver who believed this was his moment: "It's certainly going well and confidence is up with these guys on the team that every time I enter a corner at about 200, I know they've built me a car that's going to stick."

On the opportunity at Pocono specifically: "It's one of our best shots. There's been other times where we've won two and then the third racetrack is one we don't feel quite as confident at. Here, certainly we think we have a great opportunity."

He was right. He usually is lately.
